The Strange Charm Sound

Higgs Boson and the Strange Charm's sound has been described in many different ways by many different people. Some people hear influences of Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Genesis, Sting and the list just goes on and on....

The easiest thing to do is to click >>HERE<< and have a listen for yourself.

The main instrumentation of the band is vocals, guitars, keyboards, bass, drums and percussion. Part of the sound is created by the extensive use of the Shure SM57 microphones used in many of these recordings. The Cave has many fine valve and condenser microphones but m1 likes some of the subtle colorations of the older ones. The band have enjoyed working with producer Chris McCusker on this album.

The control room in the Cave

Most of the tracks are close miked but spacial delays are often used during the mix. Most of the recording is done in "The Cave" a small studio near m1's home just outside of Bathurst NSW Australia. It has a very casual and homely sort of feel to it. On some days long hours are worked but they fly by in, what seems like, no time at all....

The Cave

The Cave is largely a digital studio although the old analogue tape machines are still completely operational. The heart of the main work station is an Intel quad-core chip currently running Windows 7 with Sonar being the main recoding package. Many third party software packages and plugins are used for specialized purposes and even some of the old analogue outboard processing and keyboards are very useful in creating unusual textures and noise.

This new equipment is some of the most powerful editing equipment on the planet but very little editing is done on this album. Most of the tracks in these recordings are a single takes from the start to end. It seems to take much longer to editing something than to just record it again.

The magic is in the process

The process of producing an album these days is much the "same as it ever was" except the machines have gotten much smaller and almost disappeared. There are many subprocesses involved and each has it's own magic. The basics are writing, arranging, performing, engineering, producing and mastering. For me the learning and the enjoyment are the magic and that's in everything we do.

One of the beauties of these new technologies is that they can tend to blur the lines between the various processes. During the mixing and producing you can still be arranging and performing. Have a listen, have a laugh and may your particles always be charged.......
